Devin Schoeffler

The artist that I chose to blog about is named Devin Schoeffler.  Schoeffler is a creative director, web, motion and graphic designer.  He is also a CSU San Marcos graduate.   A lot of his work is done in photoshop and ranges from a variety of subjects from animals to people.  A lot of his work is very surreal and consist of colors that are very bright and vibrancy.  

There is one group of photoshop pieces in his work page is called Historical Typography Posters that i really liked and thought was pretty cool.  Made art pieces of famous historical scientists such as Albert Einstein and Charles Darwin of using nothing but words.

Beer Ice Man is another one of my favorites by Schoeffler.  He transformed his model into an ice person and when he is drinking the beer you can see right through the models body as the beer goes down as if he is an ice sculpture.  He also gives you a quick tutorial on how he had achieved this effect.

This is a husband wife team working with negative manipulation. they will scan the negatives and then put them together and manipulate them in some sort of photoshop program. There really isn't a lot on the process. I think they like to keep it a secret.

I am somewhat mystified about how graphic designers connect to clients without having a large corporate agency drawing attention to them. I suppose I am naive when it comes to the networking that goes on. I was searching for the top 10 graphic designers on google search and came across this site showcasing their portfolio sites. These are the designer's calling cards, the first impressions clients will have of the designers. They create them to be an expression of themselves, to put their best foot forward . As I previewed each site I could feel the intense passion for their craft these artists possess. I thought this site would inspire the designer in each of us, and maybe help to give an idea of what the professionals do to get their work and name out there. David Airey is a self-employed graphic designer and author who specializes in brand identities and resides in Northern Ireland. He worked with many companies including Yellow Pages (Canada), Giacom (England), Asian Development Bank (Philippines), Berthier Associates (Japan). He has published two books on the topic of design one of which was translated into 8 languages. His blogs are widely popular and are visited by more than 600,000 designers every month.

I have chosen David Airey as the subject for my blog because I admire his work and work method. He can read the client’s mind and understand the client’s goals. On his website he gives examples of work process that helped me immensely. The combination of research and mind-maps aids inspired me. The scans of his notes demonstrate progression and development of his ideas. He has a great work flow. I also found his blogs very helpful as he addresses the most common questions young designers might have. His advice on learning, getting hired, self-employment, and typography are based on experience. I was especially interested in his work with clients as it is not covered by any class I attend. Being able to create a design brief and extract information about what the client needs is half the job done.

Cubism, Insect Eyes, and Photographic Innovation

This article I found as I was researching cubism was really awesome about the new invention inspired by Duchamp's Nude Descending Staircase, and the bio-physical makeup of a flies' eyes, The light-field camera. I personally like the b&w better because it proves how drawing drones out the rest of the world without color. A simple pencil and paper has incredible ability for the creative mind. I do like the color though, because it shows the overlap well and personally I like the color red.

cubism research

While working on my cubism piece I had to go back to the Art History 2 class to refresh my memory. I still clearly rememebered how significant cubism became being the first abstract form of art that abandoned traditional perspective rendering in favor of displaying many spacial and temporal perspectives simultaneously. What I did not recall was that cubism developed in two phases: analytical and synthetic. I realized that most of the cubism examples I encountered on the internet represented the analytical phase. In fact so did my piece.  I attach a link to a website that describes the artistic period of Pablo Picasso who was one of the fathers of cubism. Looking at his work it is easy to follow the birth and development of cubism. It helped me understand and analyze the piece I am working on and choose a direction more suited to my intention.

Artist of the week :]

My artist of the week would happen to be a team so its more like artists. Tim noble and sue webster are not photographers but their work has made me look deeper into the lighting and subject matter of an object. We have the ability as artists to transform anything from garbage to jewels into anything we want the mind to see. This can happen outside the camera or post production, either way we can challenge our mind to trick the eye in the best way. These two are environmental sculptors. Their work is PHENOMENAL. interesting photoshop tutorial

I found a tutorial on how to change a person into a Na'vi from the movie Avatar and other tutorials. Here is the link I found this tutorial on http://www.webdesign.org/photoshop/photo-editing/angelina-jolie-as-a-na-vi-from-avatar-movie.18062.html. The tutorial is advanced, shows each step, and tells you what you need and the areas that need to be changed. The web site also features other tutorials for other things in Photoshop and other programs.

Justin Kazmierzak here with an artist of the week!

I don't know if anyone's familiar with Teefury.com, but they are a graphic T-shirt making site that does crossover parodies. The company started out by doing their own designs (as can be seen in their archives), but they didn't sell very well. So now they make and sell T-shirts with "crossovers". These crossovers entail taking familiar characters from two different franchises and blending them together to create something hilarious. Teefury is comprised of many artists, one of which is Jason Tracewell, whom I find most fascinating.
Jason Tracewell is a Californian artist who worked for an ad agency before becoming an artist at Teefury, and he sometimes applies his business experience to his work. (as can be seen below). He specializes in doing shirt parodies of video game characters. He believes that the key to reaching his target audience lies in effective communication.
